In a good shape

I've promised myself to study hard this term.Luckily, everything has been going on smoothly and my performance is definitely the best out of the 4 terms so far. Thank God, 80s and 90s midterm results are coming back to me again.

Last term, housemate WX told me that sometimes it’s not that you’re not capable of doing well, but you just lack that bit of time to grasp the materials properly. Come to think of it, I really lacked the time to revise for every subject equally last term, aside from my weak grasp of materials in certain subjects. It was difficult for me to jungle between assignments and midterms flood, until I truly felt the need to take summer course.

If I could, I really wouldn’t give up but it’s really beyond my control to decide about this anymore. When my mind says yes but body shakes head to me, I know it’s time to re-arrange my course registration.

Mom advises me not to push myself too hard and just take summer course if necessary.

“ You’ll be sitting at home for 4 months if you don’t take summer course anyway, so why not just study for another 1.5 month.”

So that’s the reason why I’ll be back in late June. If not, I can’t imagine myself taking 7 courses for every term next year, I know it’ll be a nearly impossible task for me to do well academically.

Although everyone will be going on a vacation when I'm still burying my head in between books, I'm really not in a holiday mood now. The joyfulness I had gained from the Vancouver winter games was as exciting as going on a vacation.I feel so energetic after seeing all the fantastic people and fabulous events around me.

Too bad it was gone too quickly.

Cammmm Cammmm Campbell's!

Hey guys.

I can finally rest my mind temporarily after having my last midterm for this semester. When school starts, every part of me will function at full engine as well because there's just so much to do in school.

014

These were the 2 cans of Campbell soup that I was talking about last time. I did an assignment this term on Campbell soup. and my task was to compare the regular cream soup and low-fat cream soup in terms of ingredients, labeling regulations, consumer trend, and lastly, personal experience.

Out of curiosity, I tried out both products to make a better analysis on the taste and texture of these products. Okok, I'll cut out the crap and basically the most distinct difference was that the low-fat cream soup was less saltier than the regular cream soup.

It almost drove me crazy to find each ingredient's functional property to the product. The first question went like :
Explain the role of each ingredient in terms of its contribution to the product.

So the web says that oil is an emulsifier. It makes sense to assume that everything with oil in it has emulsifying property.

First I saw Chicken fat, which has oil it in. So I immediately classified it as an emulsifier.
Secondly I saw Canola oil, which is also a type of oil. Hmm, maybe they need 2 different emulsifiers, so I added it onto the list.
Then I saw other types of ingredients which are oily and contain fats, and I started to question myself.

SO ALL OF THEM ARE EMULSIFIERS? AND ADD AROMAS TO THE FOOD?

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY FATS AND OILS IN A PRODUCT WHICH SERVE THE SAME PURPOSE? WHAT FOR?

Okay. I couldn't come up with a proper answer for now, although I spent quite some time researching the ingredient list. I feel like the more I understand, the more confusing I am. Ironic I know, but somehow I managed to make up some parts of it based on my own knowledge in combination with what I've learnt in class.

After doing the assignment, I definitely understand my friend's feeling:

A is a flavour enhancer, B & C are also flavour enhancers.WTH most of them are flavour enhancers, how am I supposed to explain them?

I was on the same boat too. Perhaps this assignment helped to open up my eyes to the world of food chemistry. It's time for me to make new friends with the ingredients from now onwards.

By the way, here's something extra for the day:

EU:为何有冬瓜,南瓜,西瓜,但就是没有北瓜?

That made my day.

Sunway College students are all rich kids?

I have confronted a very interesting question while I work as a freelancer this month.Despite, this is not something new to me because there are people who ask me such a question since the day I enrolled in Sunway College last year, I still find it an interesting scene when every new friend comes out with the perception that Sunway University College students are all rich kids.

Friend A: Hey, what college are you currently studying?
Me: Oh, I've completed my pre-u studies last year at Sunway College.
Friend A: Wah... then you must be a rich kid, then don't need to work also can lah!
Me: Hmmm, but I don't get pocket money if I don't work.
Friend A: Haiya, just need to ask your parents to give you, then it should be okay already.
Me:......
Friend A: You got scholarship or your family is paying for you?
Me: I got partial scholarship and the rest was paid by my parents.

Being a former Sunway student, I can assure you that not all Sunway students come from filthy rich families, and this is definitely a fact I realised after mixing up with other students and classmates. There are those who come from middle-income earners or even financially disabled ones, but they choose Sunway College due to the comfortable study environment and efficient teaching methods. Just like other colleges, Sunway College shows their concern and generosity by offering scholarships and some other financial aids to their students, which makes it an attainable choice to study over there. Even if you don't obtain full A's in SPM, you will still be offered a partial scholarship to minimize the annual tuition fee.

Sometimes I'm doubtful on the idea, why can't Sunway students work to earn extra pocket money, it's definitely a better way to gain money than showing up their hands always to get money from their parents, without knowing how hard the source of their spending come from. Even if they are rich, what's wrong with they work to get what they want with their own money, besides utilizing their holiday time to gain some experience and exposure? In addition, working part-time is not a big deal for peers at our age.

"Furthermore, rich kids cannot work one meh?"

Sorry, but I'm yet to be that pampered to shake legs at home and ain't doing something contributive for the entire long period of my free days.

Rich kids still have to get out out the comfy zone and start devoting themselves into the working field after completing their tertiary education, so working part-time is just an early exposure for them to get used to the workload as well as working hours which they're going to experience it permanently in future.

All in all, there'll be rich kids everywhere, not all centered in just one place.
Therefore, I just hope that this will correct the perception of those out there who still think Sunway College is an institution which gathers a bunch of rich kids, trust me, because I've experienced it and that's why I'm emerging it out. With brilliant academic performance, one can easily be studying at Sunway with full waiver on tuition fees as well.

Furthermore,be it rich kids or poor kids, will still end up working someday, don't self-create a border to distinguish students based on their family's wealthiness, the chunks of money don't fall from the sky easily, there must be some tough stories behind their parents as well.

Forget about that, everyone will have to work for their desires and demands.

And therefore I, am still happy to work as a part-timer and receive self-income, while reminiscing my past experience at Sunway College.

Left Brain VS Right Brain

Have you ever wondered whether you're left brained or right brained person?
When I flipped through the newspaper today and an interesting article caught my eye, it is about the the brain functioning besides body coordination. Come to think of it,everyone of us thinks differently based on our preference for the style of thinking, whether we are left-brained or right-brained people.

Left-brained people are generally more rational and analytical which lead them to a task-orientated life while right-brained people have high creativity and flexibility. Many of us are more to one of these styles of thinking although there are some who are more whole brained and equally adept to both modes. That brings a lot of my doubt,
" Does this mean that left-brained people and right-brained people will never do things the same because they have different thinking style?"

Out of curiousity,I went online to have a mini research on this topic, more about the way to know my brain better since I've no hint on the type of thinking style which I practise. This is where I found something interesting, our daily practises somehow give some clue to the dominant hemisphere of our brain.

Try out this simple test:
When you turn around,do you turn clockwise or anti-clockwise?
If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic,detail oriented,facts rule,words and language
present and past,math and science,can comprehend,knowing
acknowledges,order/pattern perception,knows object name
reality based,forms strategies,practical,safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling,"big picture" oriented,imagination rules
symbols and images,present and future,philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning),believes,appreciates
spatial perception,knows object function,fantasy based
presents possibilities,impetuous,risk taking

After all, I feel that it is actually not ourselves that determine our thinking completely, the brain has set it for us to think it in certain ways ,just like right-brained people will day dream more but left-brained people are more practical. It is how our brain coordinates and bring us to different decision.See the logic? Hmm..brain is actually the determinant of my life!!!

OOO,so next time if I ever did something incredible, I can proudly say
" because I'm 36% of a right-brained person who takes risk" XD

What happens to the rest of 67%?
